WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT OUR MORENITA, LUYA?

Well, because the Mexic-Arte Museum is opening another exhibition: Rosas y Revelaciones: Homage to la Virgen de Guadalupe. It features 90 textile works from artists across sixteen Mexican states, garments woven and embroidered and beaded in her honor.

A few weeks ago, Luisa Fernanda Perez, Curator of Exhibitions and Director of Programs at Mexic-Arte Museum, reached out to me for a music recommendation. She needed someone romantic. Someone whose sound could hold the weight of the room: the devotion, the beauty, the reverence of an exhibition like this.

I suggested two artists. Only one was available. That artist was Midnight Navy.

Curation. Curation is a skill.

I’ve spent years immersed in music, in culture, in art, and the spaces where they intersect. I know what artists carry certain kinds of energy. I know what sounds hold ceremonial space. I know what fits. And when Luisa asked, I didn’t have to think for long, I knew what that exhibition needed to feel like.

Rosas y Revelaciones opens April 17th and runs through August 9th, 2026 at Mexic-Arte Museum, 419 Congress Ave, Austin, TX. The exhibition is a true celebration of Mexico’s textile heritage, embroidery, weaving, appliqué, beadwork, all in devotion to an image that has endured for nearly 500 years.

There are also photographs by Jesse Herrera documenting Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, the first Catholic church built specifically to serve Mexican and Mexican American communities in Austin, founded in 1907.

Free public tours are happening April 19th with Jesse Herrera and April 26th with textile artist and project founder Linda Hanna, both at noon. Admission is always free on Sundays.

Shout out to Luisa for all the amazing work she does for the Mexic-Arte Museum. Shout out to the whole staff, I know how hard y’all work fr, the real work here is all of theirs, and it is extraordinary. Amazing, if you will.

Screen printing is just one type of print-making. There’s also block-printing which can be done with different types of materials, sun prints, and wayyyy more.

My journey in the arts started when I was a kid, taking art classes in middle and high school purely for the love of it. In college, I designed my very first shirt for a friend’s music video. After I graduated with an Engineering degree (+ a Teaching STEM Cert and Digital Arts & Media Cert), I began teaching for the Museum. I also DJ as Hierba Malita and am the Founder of FLWRPOT… so it’s been a fun, winding road learning what the creative industry is really about.

Last month, I gave my first public print-making workshop at Tomo Mags for an event hosted by Future Front, and it felt like everything clicking into place.

You can literally start with a piece of styrofoam.

Seriously. By drawing into a flat piece of styrofoam with a pencil, you create indentations. Once lightly layered with ink or paint, those grooves don’t pick up the color the way the flat surface does, so when you press it down, you’ve just made a custom stamp! Made to be reused, made with only 2 items!

HOW TO MAKE STAMP OUT OF STYROFOAM.

Step 1: Gather your materials

• Pencil

• Flat Piece of Styrofoam

• Ink + Roller

• Paper

Step 2: Draw (invertedly) your design on the styrofoam.

Step 3: Trim it to your liking

Step 4: Ink your Stamp

Step 5: Stamp on Paper

RESULTS:

Me personally? I’m gonna write letters on these and send them off to loved ones!

Lately, I’ve been teaching people about cyanotype prints. I love it because it is a more scientific form of print-making where you collaborate with the sun (or UV lights) to create images based on the shadows of objects placed on top of cyanotype-treated material, like silk or cotton paper.

It’s my first time really experimenting with cyanotype, and I didn’t use traditional fine art materials. I used what was accessible to me because I’m really interested in making art that feels open, reachable, and rooted in experimentation rather than perfection, and also becauase my supplies and funds were limited, ha.

El Cumbiero Romántico is dedicated to my dad.
He’s the reason I feel so free exploring the arts.

He raised me to create without fear.
He’s why music is at the center of my life.

While in my deep listening journey through the Badu Discography, I found myself deeply resonating and understanding the message behind “Bag Lady.”

Let me show you the introductory lyrics below:

EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE DEFINITION

What goes unresolved will remain stored in our mind and body as traumatic experiences. Now… there are different methods to release trauma from the mind and body. Some are temporary, some are more permanent. Some are succesful releasing it fully due to sheer will, while others need assistance through therapy or somatic exersices. It depends on the person and situation, but the science behind trauma is the same.

Negative and harmful experiences can stick to our bodies and mind, PTSD.2

The point is - if we do nothing. If we try to pretend that it is not there, or that it does not exist… then we aren’t releasing the trauma. It stays living within us. It remains heavy in our heart, weighing our bodies down.

SECRETS ARE AN ILLNESS TO OUR SOULS.

Secrets, subconcious or not, are connected to the trauma stored within us. Personally I’ve been thinking a lot about how common it is in traditional Mexican homes to sweep shit under the rug, to pretend nothing wrong happened.

A lot of unaccountable or unspoken apologies are that way. When someone does something harmful, some would rather make up for it via gifts or jokes, instead of being real and vulnerable about finding the root issues and being committed to better behavior in the name of love.

We kinda just accept that things are the way they are and that’s just the way it is. We fail to realize we have control, and a choice in how we live our lives.

Keeping the secrets, is the same as carrying that emotional baggage.

Emotional Hoarding.

To let go and fully release, you must speak.

One day, you will realize that the only blockages in your life are the self imposed emotional bags. Unhealed trauma. That the only thing stopping us from living the lives we desire, is the grip and commitment to secrecy due to shame.

So if we really want to live a full authentic life, letting go is the only way. Letting go can look different to anyone. Maybe its writing in a journal, maybe it is a song. Maybe its screaming at the void, maybe it is confronting your family.

That thing… the ones we keep avoiding IS what is in the way.

That emotinal baggage that we keep holding on to… If we dont pick it up and throw it away, it is going to keep taking up space in our minds, taking up too much of our thinking time, and and therefore too much power over our lives.

So, how serious are we about letting go of the baggage? That is the question.

Its hard but it is simple. That’s what my mentor always tells me.

To live that real authentic life full of love, choosing to love yourself looks like releasing the emotional baggage.

Loving ourselves looks like intentionally healing our past traumas.
